Our Mission & Purpose

RICJ is a social justice organization dedicated to fighting bias, bigotry and racism and promoting understanding and respect among all races, religions and cultures through advocacy, conflict resolution and education.
It is our purpose to transform communities to be more inclusive and just by empowering leaders to make institutional change.

Different People, Common Ground
RICJ does not represent any single constituency. We are the voice that calls all people to common ground, with respect for differences but with the understanding that people of all backgrounds have common values and needs that unite them.

Our Methods

  • We utilize our network of community leaders to solve problems by fostering open dialogue and planning across diverse groups. We are trusted facilitators and brokers. We help divergent groups find common ground. Our approach is to work hard on issues while leaving people whole.
  • We advocate directly for change. We organize coalitions and advocate on our own for inclusive and fair treatment of all people. We have played important roles in the passage of hate crime legislation in RI and in the study of racial profiling by all police departments.
  • We help businesses to develop strategies related to diversity, coach business leaders on implementation and educate workers for change. We serve on advisory boards and councils across a wide range of governmental, non-profit and business groups.
  • We are a public voice for fairness and inclusion. We issue statements, opinion pieces and independent studies on critical community issues.
  • We provide formal "class-room" style diversity awareness and education programs for participants ages 15 to adult. These programs range from short motivational sessions to multi-year contracts.
  • We also provide "out of the box" experiential learning by bringing people into contact across the lines of diversity in community based settings. These experiences include live in programs such as Project RESPECT for teens.
  • We support others who want to work on the issues. We can link community advocates and educators with resources and with key leaders to help them create change.
