RICJ's Youth Leadership Institute will be held June 24-29, 2012. High school youth will have the opportunity to build leadership skills, knowledge, and cultural awareness. It is a place where Delegates (Youth) explored issues of race, power and privilege; gender role expectations; community building; and nonviolent conflict resolution. Learning occurred in interactive activities, discussion groups and workshops. Youth developed their talents and creativity throughout the weeklong camp. At their Culture Night event, parents and supporters came to witness their transition into positive young leaders. After camp they will continue practicing leadership through the afterschool Youth Action Council program.
Project Respect Youth Leadership Institute will be June 24 – 29, 2012 at Canonicus Camp and Conference Center in Exeter RI. For more information contact Jayme Mallindine, VISTA Youth Coordinator at 401-467-1717 x 100 or email at leadership@ricj.org. Our anti-discrimination mission leads RICJ to a particular concern with those most harmed by an inadequate health care system: children, the poor, minority populations and those with serious health conditions. We have partnered with the RI Civil Rights Roundtable to lead a series of public forums on issues of health care, education and immigration. The RICJ Board of Directors created a Statement of Principles for Health Care Reform on the values and outcomes that health care reform must achieve. The statement begins, "Health care is a fundamental human right". RICJ, the URI Providence Campus and the Providence Human Relations Commission co-sponsored a Health Care Reform Forum on Human Rights Day, December 10, at 5:00pm at the URI Providence Campus Paff Auditorium. A thoughful, respectful dialogue ensued at the well attended forum, with Lt Gov Elizabeth Roberts, a panel of health care experts, and with video messages from our RI Congressional Delegation. | Youth Action Council BBQ | JUNE 22, 2010: PRESS CONFERENCE RICJ Juvenile Justice Program This collaborative program, bringing together representatives of community, courts, law enforcement, education, juvenile hearing boards, mental health and social service professionals and youth, has quietly been working on a data-driven, systems-change model to reduce the disproportionate numbers of minority juveniles in the RI juvenile justice system. Their approach is to improve systems and policies and provide diversionary alternatives to give troubled youth needed serrvices and a better chance. After working together over the past year and a half through a grant from the RI Justice Commission, we are now beginning to see postive change and we wanted to tell Rhode Island about this important work, our partners and successes.
