Welcome the Class of 2010
PROJECT RESPECT
Youth Leadership Institute
& YOUTH ACTION COUNCIL

RICJ's Youth Leadership Institute helps youth build leadership skills, knowledge, and cultural awareness about themselves and their communities. Delegates (Youth) explored issues of race, power and privilege; gender role expectations; community building; and nonviolent conflict resolution.

Learning occurs in interactive activities, discussion groups, and workshops. The youth develop their talents and creativity over the course of the week. At their Culture Night event their parents and supporters are invited to witness their transition into positive young leaders.  After the camp they continue practicing leadership through the afterschool Youth Action Council program.

Project Respect Youth Leadership Institute was June 26 – July 1, 2010. The program Director is Nanda Shewmangal, 401-467-1717 x 103 or email at nandas@etal.uri.edu.  If you would like to know more about the camp experience, check out last year's delegate - Skylar's youtube.com video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKXojx8HKV0 or type Project Respect 2009.

HEALTH CARE AS A HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUE
A Forum for Human Rights Day, 12/10/09

Our anti-discrimination mission leads RICJ to a particular concern with those most harmed by an inadequate health care system: children, the poor, minority populations and those with serious health conditions.  The RICJ Board of Directors created a Statement of Principles for Health Care Reform, focused on the values that underlie the debate in health care reform, and outcomes that reform must achieve.  The statement begins, "Health care is a fundamental human right".

RICJ, the URI Providence Campus and the Providence Human Relations Commission co-sponsored a Health Care Reform Forum on Human Rights Day, December 10, at 5:00pm at the URI Providence Campus Paff Auditorium.  A thoughful, respectful dialogue ensued at the well attended forum, with Lt Gov Elizabeth Roberts, a panel of health care experts, and with video messages from our RI Congressional Delegation.

STAY TUNED FOF DATE/TIME:
PRESS CONFERENCE
RICJ Juvenile Justice Program

This collaborative program, bringing together representatives of community, courts, law enforcement, education, juvenile hearing boards, mental health and social service professionals and youth, has quietly been working on a data-driven, systems-change model to reduce the disproportionate numbers of minority juveniles in the RI juvenile justice system.  Their approach is to improve systems and policies and provide diversionary alternatives to give troubled youth needed serrvices and a better chance.  After working together over the past year and a half through a grant from the RI Justice Commission, we are now beginning to see postive change and we want to tell Rhode Island about this important work.  Stay tuned for the time and location of a joint press conference describing the project, partners and successes.
